What is a PowerKureTM System?

PowerKureTM is an energy saving and power quality system. It saves energy by up to 34% (nominal) with paybacks of less than two years while filtering surges and harmonics, stabilizing voltage, and protecting equipment and machinery. The PowerKureTM System is comprised of  a combination of components which include Inductors, Reactors, Capacitors, Resistors, Filters, Contactors, Fuses, Self Diagnostic Feature (SDF) and in some cases, a PowerKureTM Regulator, a device which is capable of monitoring and controlling such as a microprocessor. These are the typical electrical components assembled into a switchboard cubical. The unique features of the PowerKureTM System are achieved by the design of the system and its Ladder Logic response.

How are savings determined?

We actually test and measure your electrical load during the course of the plant's normal operation. We then collect a copy of your past twelve months electric bills to draw a concise picture of the plant's load profile. From this information, we determine both the electrical characteristics, as well as the load behaviour. After we evaluate this information, and upon the acceptance, we run the "Link Analysis" of each branch circuit. This information determines our exact approach to address all of the problems and improvements for your plant., We then program this data into our PowerKureTM Regulator which then reacts to the plant's load conditions.

Why take measurements first?

From the measurement data taken, we are able to point out the areas in your plant where energy is being wasted. These information and related electrical readings/data will be analyzed, and from which a computer generated comprehensive report will result. In conjunction with the technical information, we include a cost/payback schedule. At the time of our presentation, we will go over the entire report with you, answering any and all of your questions. If you wish, your engineering staff or utility representatives may be present at that time, to help verify our claims and projected savings.

Should the plant be down for the preliminary audit?

No. As a matter of fact, the closer to the normal operation, while we are taking the measurement, the more accurate will be the results.

What components are standard and what is optional?

The PowerKureTM System provides the following Standard/Optional Features and Benefits to an electrical distribution system:

STANDARD FEATURES :

bullet

Improves and stabilizes voltage supplied to the load, thereby minimizing heat generation. This results in energy savings, improved production and increased equipment efficiency and longevity.

bullet

Reduces phase current and balances the load over the three phases based on X/R and Z, reducing negative voltage sequences and circulating currents, resulting in reduced equipment maintenance and failure

bullet

Shields against an infinite number of surges, transients, and spikes, thereby protecting your investment in the plant and equipment while saving money.

bullet

Filters Broadband Harmonics, resulting in increased equipment longevity while proportionally reducing the effect of harmonics on monthly electric bills. Reduces line, eddy current and hysteresis losses, thereby reducing the kilowatt demand and kilowatt hour consumption.

bullet

Improves power factor by reducing reactive and apparent power through damped response, increasing system efficiency and eliminating possible related charges while reducing line losses (I2R). Optimizes power factor and requires only a fraction of the standard capacitor banks normally needed, but without any deleterious side effects.

bullet

Releases distribution's wasted KVA capacity, thereby allowing additional loads without requiring over sizing of the transformer or electrical switchgear size.

OPTIONAL FEATURES:

bullet

Brownout Protection - Brownout protection maintains and increases voltage over that supplied by the transformer during temporary low line voltage.

bullet

Intermittent Supply Failure Protection - Supplies continuous voltage during short duration intermittent supply failure and line switching.

bullet

Specific Harmonics Filtering - Filters specific and multiple harmonics such as third, fifth, seventh... to a non-destructive level, resulting in energy savings, improved production and increased equipment efficiency and longevity

How does the PowerKureTM System reduce the KWD and KWH?

The utility meter reads the highest phase reading or area under the curve and identifies all the energy under the curve. The PowerKureTM System reduces KW demand and KWH through the following:

bullet

Stabilizing and improving voltage, thereby increasing system efficiency and reduced running temperature of the load.

bullet

Balancing the three phases based on X/R, thereby reducing negative voltage sequence and circulating currents and improving system efficiency.

bullet

Filtering surges, transients, and broadband harmonics, thereby reducing True RMS component of power.

bullet

Reducing line, Eddy current, and Hysteresis losses, thereby increasing system efficiency.

bullet

Improving Power Factor, thereby increasing system efficiency while reducing distribution losses.

If anything happens to the PowerKureTM System, will we lose operation time?

No. Provisions are taken so that it would be almost impossible for the PowerKureTM to fail completely, or disrupt or jeopardize the plant's operation because of parallel installation (s) both internally and externally. Should there be an unlikely event of failure of the PowerKureTM System, it is designed to isolate itself immediately from the electrical system.

What savings can we expect?

The PowerKureTM System can deliver power savings of up to 34% of the existing electric utility costs without reducing any existing load. Furthermore, savings resulting from the elimination of down time and equipment failure, elimination of maintenance expenses and elimination of penalty charges due to poor Power Factor are all "BONUSES".

How can we be sure that we are getting the savings after installation

The savings in energy consumption will become obvious as soon as the PowerKureTM System is switched on. An Amp meter can be installed in any or all of the phases and as the PowerKureTM System is switched on and off, the Amp meter will reflect the increase and decrease in the current being drawn and therefore the system's savings. This is on a real time basis. Further, the same set of measurement can be taken with the PowerKureTM System "ON" and "OFF". Results are apparent. All PowerKureTM models are already equipped with its own Amp and Power Factor meter.

Do you guarantee the savings?

Yes! and in writing!  If all matters remain as they were at the time of measurement and design and based on conditions addressed in "Verification of PowerKureTM Savings", we guarantee the savings indicated on the "Savings Profile" sheet and the breakdowns of benefits listed therein and contained in your proposal or we will pay you back the difference.

How much does the PowerKureTM System cost?

Historically the payback period for the PowerKureTM System has been less than two years (after taking into account the depreciation or capital goods allowance/tax deduction). The consumption savings generated by the System will pay for the System in less than three years. Since the System is custom designed for each client, with its own savings profile, a final quotation/price can only be made after the measurement is taken and analyzed.

What are the payment arrangements?

We require a substantial deposit (normally 50%} with the order. The balance is due on commissioning of the system.  Each unit is custom designed and manufactured specifically for a particular plant. Therefore, they cannot be used at any other locations. Thus, when they are ordered for you, they can service only your plant.

Can I make payments in installments?

Yes. Third party financing is available with terms based on your credit rating. We can arrange for a lease/purchase plan that can be worked out and beneficial to both of us.

Can the PowerKureTM System work on generators?

Yes. As a matter of fact it will increase and enhance power delivery of the generator so that it can serve more load efficiently and with higher power quality.

How effective is the PowerKureTM System with UPS? (Uninterrupted Power Supply)

UPS systems waste energy rather than save it and many generate harmonics and can be extremely sensitive to surges and transients. Installation of the PowerKureTM System in conjunction with UPS will enhance the UPS Systems operation while it saves energy.

Will humidity effect the PowerKureTM System?

It should not, other than normal corrosion and oxidation in case of excessive relative humidity.

If we have more than one transformer/main panel board, how many PowerKureTM Systems do we need?

Typically one PowerKureTM System is required for each transformer/main panel switchboard. However, exact breakdown and number of units will be determined following the Link Analysis to ensure PowerKureTM's performance and effectiveness. Moreover, you need not require PowerKureTM for some of your transformer/main panel switchboard if their saving profiles are not economical for you to install PowerKureTM.

Can I purchase a lesser number of systems than the number of transformers we have on site?

Yes.  You can have a custom designed system for each individual  transformer or have one complete customized system.  Additional systems can be added later.

If I have three transformers and I am paying power factor penalty charges but I only want to buy two units of PowerKureTM.   Can you design the two PowerKureTM units with a good power factor facility to ensure that I don't have to pay power factor charges after the installation of PowerKureTM Units?

Yes, we can if the third transformer is generating a fairly good power factor rate, for example close to 70%. Keep in mind, the additional benefits provided for the load on the third transformer will not be available without a PowerKureTM System.

Will the PowerKureTM System cause tripping of my plant after installation?

This has never happened with previous installations for the past 15 years. If there is a fault in the PowerKureTM, it cuts itself off and isolate itself from the rest of the plant.

What kind of loads can benefit the PowerKureTM System's features?

All kinds of loads. This includes Capacitive, Inductive, and Resistive loads.

Can the PowerKureTM System be used when power consumption exceeds 10MW?

Yes. This is because PowerKureTM System is custom-designed to match each individual load.

What is the effect of the PowerKureTM System on DC loads?

The system is specifically designed for AC three phase loads, therefore the benefits for DC loads are minimal.

Does the PowerKureTM System handle distortions coming in from the HT primary side of the transformer?

Yes.

Can the PowerKureTM System benefit single phase loads?

Single phase loads connected to a three phase load will benefit from the PowerKureTM System. However, the system does not specially address single phase loads.

Does the PowerKureTM System consume power?

Very little energy is used when PowerKureTM is turned on as most of its components are passive.

Can the PowerKureTM System be used for power generating stations?

Yes.

What is the smallest size PowerKureTM System available?

Subject to economy of scale, the smallest size can cater for a load drawing 100 Amps.

Do I need individual units for each SCR control motor?

Not necessarily.  At the time of the audit, those questions will be answered.

Why is the PowerKureTM System designed based on the measured load and not the transformer's maximum load?

The PowerKureTM System is designed and manufactured based on measured load to ensure optimum savings, quality of power and other benefits. Also, the cost will be cheaper than based on the transformer's full load as such load may never present.

For what period can the PowerKureTM System protect against (a) Momentary Power Failure and (b) Brownout?

(a) Momentary Power Failure - PowerKureTM, if required, can be designed to manage up to 1 second though when such event occurs it is generally       for 1/2 - 2 cycles. Therefore we will design this feature according to your needs.

(b) Brownout - PowerKureTM can manage for up to 1 minute or longer as desired.

Is the PowerKureTM System registered with the local government as an energy saving device?

Yes. In certain countries including Canada.

Is there a special depreciation allowance for using the PowerKureTM System?

In certain countries, yes. There are countries where users are given allowances to encourage the purchase of PowerKureTM because the country's power generation company will have improved power quality and additional availability of power released by PowerKureTM for sale to other customers.  In Canada, the consumer submits an application.

Frequency converters create quasi-square waves causing distorted current waveforms. Can the PowerKureTM System resolve the waveforms back to a sinusoidal wave?

Yes.

Does the PowerKureTM System correct frequency fluctuation?

No.

How does the PowerKureTM System arrest surges?

Through delta connection and matching impedance and LC factor.

How can we benefit if the KWH meter is connected on the HT side?

Whatever load is consumed on the LT side, it is registered at the HT side. When the load is reduced at the LT side, the KWH meter will naturally register a lower reading on the HT side.

Are two PowerKureTM Systems required if two transformers are running parallel using one MSB?

If the two transformers are running parallel, one PowerKureTM unit is required as long as there is no coupler at the MSB to separate the two transformers.

Is the PowerKureTM System designed for gas, coal, nuclear, hydro-electric energy or does it matter?

It does not matter what type of energy source is used.

If the primary side of the transformer is receiving 420 volts, can the PowerKureTM System reduce it to 415 volts on the secondary side or to any desired voltage?

No.

Can PowerKureTM increase the voltage in the secondary side of the transformer?

Yes. The PowerKureTM 's microprocessor is able to sense and regulate the voltage level desired by you. This is to say that if the transformer is tapped at 415V but you are receiving 400V, the standard PowerKureTM will be able to increase the voltage near to 415V at the secondary side or load centre.

How is PowerKureTM compared with surge suppressor devices?

The standard surge suppressor that is available in the market is usually designed for high magnitude surges or surges that are above normal voltage sine waves; their resistance decreases as the voltage increases. Depending on magnitude of the surge, it can destroy these devices because of excess magnitude over their rating and massive heat which is generated for each clamping. It is also very difficult to detect component failure within these devices.  However, PowerKureTM can recognize smaller surges, transients and sags as well as large ones, and treat them without generating massive heat, with ergonomically accessible monitoring and self-diagnostic feature to detect component failures.

Can PowerKureTM be used in high voltage applications?

Yes.  PowerKureTM can be used on voltages from 220 up to 245 KV, but due to high potential present, PowerKureTM cannot provide its linear response by means of switching the stages as it performs in low voltage applications. As a result, its effectiveness and savings will be smaller in magnitude as compared to low voltage applications.

For what voltage ratings can PowerKureTM be designed?

It can be designed to meet voltage ratings of 380, 415, or other set ratings.

What is the advantage of stabilizing the voltage?

It improves the reliability of the building/plant's equipment and machinery, avoids situations where motors will overheat or won't start, improves the longevity of electrically powered equipment and reduces the current drawn thereby improving the usage of energy consumption and reducing the overall cost of energy.

(a) What is the voltage range for which PowerKureTM can stabilize?

PowerKureTM can generally stabilize voltage within a 5% range.

(b) Will a "brownout" feature still be needed since PowerKureTM is able to stabilize or increase the  voltage?

Yes. In brownout situation, the voltage drops below the nominal voltage ratings for a long period of time; hence, PowerKureTM needs to increase the lower voltage to the desired voltage. This is an optional feature in PowerKureTM.

How does PowerKureTM compare with the "Voltage Stabilizer" offered by other companies?

A Voltage Stabilizer generally addresses single phase voltage only whereas PowerKureTM is designed for three phase applications and has more features.

Why is PowerKureTM an improvement over other power conditioners?

Power conditioners are normally designed for single phase applications, while PowerKureTM is designed for three phases and can improve and stabilize the voltage as well as balance the three phases based on X/R, reduce losses, increase power factor, filter surges, transients and harmonics, while freeing up KVA capacity.

Can PowerKureTM replace: (a) voltage stabilizers and (b) power conditioners equipment?

PowerKureTM is a system that does more than (a) and (b) added up together. So instead of buying several systems for your plant, just get the PowerKureTM system which can solve most of your electrical problems.

Can PowerKureTM stabilize the voltage when fluctuation variation ranges from 380 V to 480 V?

PowerKureTM cannot stabilize the voltage of such a wide fluctuation variation but is able to narrow the gap of fluctuation.

If input supply is in two stages, i.e. 66 KV to 11 KV and 11 KV to 440 V, do I require two PowerKureTM Systems for both stages?

Only one system is required at the (low voltage) side.

Where is the best place to install the PowerKureTM System for maximum efficiency and economy?

As close as possible to the load centre.

Can PowerKureTM System eliminate voltage dips?

PowerKureTM cannot eliminate the dip from occurring, however, if the PowerKureTM system is designed with momentary supply feature, it can arrest dips for up to 1 second.

What happens when our electrical load, changes? How will the PowerKureTM System cope with this change?

The PowerKureTM System is designed to address the facility's normal load at the time of measurement/design. Within these parameters the System will operate without any modifications. If the load increases beyond the designed criteria, you may upgrade PowerKureTM's size to address the plant or building's increased load, without major capital expenditure. If you do not want to upgrade PowerKureTM, the original savings will still be available. The only difference is that the client does not get the benefit of the PowerKureTM savings on the additional load increase.

If we add more machines or shift the machine's location, will it affect the PowerKureTM System?

By adding more load, PowerKureTM will not be harmed. However, the effective performance will be limited to that portion of the load that the PowerKureTM was designed for. Beyond that, extra module(s)/components need to be added to the original PowerKureTM in order to compensate for the additional portion of the load, PowerKureTM is assembled in a modular formation so it can easily be disintegrated to smaller units, to satisfy dispersion of the load.

Can PowerKureTM System be used for systems consisting of Arc Furnace and Induction Furnace?

Yes.

Is PowerKureTM System suitable for thyristor loads?

Yes, as a matter of fact, it gives a stable voltage and current which is needed for thyristors.

Can PowerKureTM balance the three phase loads when there is a high fluctuation caused by single phase welding machines?

No. This is because the imbalance is caused by the nature of the load itself.

Is the PowerKureTM System simply a power factor correction system?

It  is not a power factor correction system, although it improves power factor close to unity.   The system performs a number of crucial functions such as:

1) Reduces KW Demand and KWH consumption.

2) Eliminates harmonics, stabilizes voltage, balances the three phase system.

3) Adds life to your machinery and equipment,

4) Reduces both line transmission and distribution centre losses, and results in a more efficient use of your power consumption as well as operating     cost reductions.

As you can see, one of the least important is to improve the power factor, it is like "Icing on the cake".

If we already possess capacitor banks/(s), do we need PowerKureTM System?

Capacitors bank/(s) as you know, only improves the power factor of your facility so you do not have to pay the penalty charged by the utility company. However, capacitor banks have their inherent problems such as increasing the voltage thus resulting in the rise of temperature which damages your equipment. PowerKureTM has other benefits besides improving power factor.

If I have capacitor banks in my plant, can you modify them to work with your PowerKureTM?

Power Factor Correction Capacitors potentially pose a number of side effects that can harm and disrupt operation of equipment and machinery in a facility. Particularly where there are Computers, Variable Speed Drives (VSD), Electronic Ballasts and other nonlinear loads. If a customer is not charged severely for low Power Factor or power factor penalty by the utility company, then it would be impossible to economically justify purchase of the capacitor for that facility. And if capacitors are already installed in a facility, and they are of acceptable quality and meet PowerKureTM requirements, it is possible that the customer's capacitors can be upgraded to PowerKureTM and perform the functions as desired without major reconstructive effort on the capacitors part.

How does PowerKureTM correct power factor?

For inductive loads, when the power is lagging, it will be corrected by capacitors. For capacitive loads, when the power factor is leading, it will be corrected by inductors.

What happens to my power factor if PowerKureTM fails or isolates itself?

Your power factor will return to its original condition if PowerKureTM fails and takes itself off your system.

After installing PowerKureTM, do I still need capacitor banks to improve power factor?

No.

Should I continue using my capacitor banks after I have installed PowerKureTM System?

It is not advisable, as one of PowerKureTM 's features is to improve power factor without causing voltage to rise.

Why do you take measurements with PFCC off?

This is to identify characteristics of the facility's electrical parameters without the addition of the capacitors while insuring there is provision for sufficient correction capacity in the PowerKureTM System.

My capacitors have also reduced amps in my electrical facility, therefore can I achieve saving in my KWD and KWH?

Aside from the capacitors' usual inherent problems such as increasing voltage, heat, etc., capacitors only cause reactive amperage reduction, therefore they can never reduce KWD and KWH other than a minimal amount due to line losses. On the other hand, PowerKureTM reduces both the reactive and resistive amperage while improving voltage, reducing losses, surges, transients and harmonics with no adverse effects; hence will reduce KWD and KWH.

How can harmonics damage the equipment and how do we know that we have harmonics?

Harmonics are by-product of nonlinear loads, such as Computers, Variable Speed Drives (VSD), Electronic Ballasts and other such nonlinear loads, which are present in most installations. Harmonics are multiple integers of the line frequency; the third harmonic multiplies the line frequency by 3, and the fifth by 5, and the seventh by 7. It is understood that third, fifth, seventh, eleventh and thirteenth harmonics pose a real problem in industry. They can dramatically distort the voltage waveform supplied to motors, lighting, computers and equipment generally within the installation. They can also increase KW Demand and KW meter registrations, usually by a few percentage points. In a nutshell, harmonics can contribute to an increase in KW Demand and KWH, while distortion of the voltage waveform can cause failure of equipment and machinery.

What type of harmonics can PowerKureTM System filter?

The standard PowerKureTM can filter broadband harmonics up to an acceptable industry level. In addition, an optional feature - Specific Harmonics Filtering can filter specific and multiple harmonics to a non-destructive level.

Does PowerKureTM filter harmonics coming from the incoming HT side?

PowerKureTM if connected at the main switchboard will filter all harmonics to an acceptable level coming from the incoming HT side.

Can PowerKureTM arrest the harmonics if they are generated at load centres?

PowerKureTM if installed at the MSB cannot arrest harmonics generated by the load centres downstream. To prevent the harmonics generated by a specific equipment from going upstream, a PowerKureTM Satellite unit should be installed at this particular load centre.

What are the basic principles adopted to filter/eliminate harmonics?

Tuning and de-tuning and impedance matching.

Does the project cost include installation? If not, do you install?

The proposal itemizes installation. You may opt to have your electrician prepare for the installation and our electrician will assist at the time of delivery.

How much space is needed for locating the PowerKureTM System?

The size of each PowerKureTM is 54.25 x 28 x 25 (H x W x D) inches for the large size. PowerKureTM due to its modular structure can be custom built to meet any space limitations.

Do we have to shut down the plant/load centre for you to join your cables to our MSB for the audit?

Generally for safety reasons and if you do not have breaker (s) disconnect (s), then YES. Shut down is required for about one hour. However, if you have an adequately sized breaker (s) / disconnect (s) available, then no shutdown is required. For special applications it is possible to connect PowerKureTM without a shutdown. Consult us for more details.

Do we have to shut down the plant/load centre MSB at installation?

No.  Not in the most instances.  Consult us for more details.

Is tuning necessary or is there an automatic tuning?

PowerKureTM is pre-tuned according to the measured load of each transformer during the time the unit is manufactured. Subsequently, calibration is required only if PowerKureTM is not functioning at its optimum.

What is the life expectancy of the PowerKureTM System?

Nominal life expectancy of the system, by design, is 20 years. However, as all other electrical components are apt to perform differently, a component failure will be isolated to its own stage, while the remaining PowerKureTM stages continue to function.

What benefits does PowerKureTM System give to the upstream and downstream of my electrical facility?
 Upstream Effects.

a) Filtration of Harmonics

b) Current Reduction

c) Reduce Line Losses

d) Improvement Of Power Factor

e) Filters Surges And Transients.

f) Increasing Short Circuit Availability

 Downstream Effects.

a) Voltage Improvements.

b) Line losses Due To Voltage Imbalance.

What if some of the components fail after some period of use?

PowerKureTM is an integrated system and each stage is independently protected and operated. In case of failure of a stage, the remaining stages will not be affected and will continue to operate, minus the stage with the component failure problem. The components consist of standard and specified ones. In either case, you will be able to obtain them from number of sources (market) , if the need should arise.

Do you need an engineer to come and repair if any of the components fail?

Not necessarily. This is because the microprocessor is able to indicate to you which component/(s) have failed and generally your Plant Electrician can fix it.

Will we be given the type of components used in the PowerKureTM unit?

Yes, if required, but only after we have delivered the unit to you and within the warranty period.

Can we maintain a small inventory of PowerKureTM parts?

Yes, it is strongly recommended. If you so desire, this can be arranged after PowerKureTM is installed in your facility.

How does PowerKureTM System reduce line losses and to what percentage can it reduce them?

PowerKureTM reduces I2R (line losses) both upstream and downstream of the connection depending on the voltage and three phase imbalance.

If I move my operation location, can I still use the same PowerKureTM assuming the load remains the same?

Yes.  However, due to different voltages and electrical installations/layout, your PowerKureTM may not give you the 100% benefits as you were originally enjoying.
